A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) cadres and a Special Assistant to the Speaker of Parliament, Kofi Attoh, has disclosed that plans have been initiated to make the birthday of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings a holiday at the party level.
He revealed this information during a solemn observation ceremony and the laying of wreaths by the NDC and Rawlings’ family, on Tuesday, November 12, in his honour to mark four years of his passing.
Mr Attoh stated that a proposal has been made to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC for consideration in January 2025, when the party is voted into power.
“We need to do more to recognise him, we need to have a day preferably his birthday as a holiday for the party to celebrate him.”
Tuesday, November 12, 2024, marks exactly four years since former President Rawlings passed at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness. His demise occurred less than a month after he buried her biological mother, Victoria Agbotui.
The daughter of the late former president, Dr Zanetor Agyemang- Rawlings and the MP for Korle Klottey, expressed disappointment in illegal mining, stating that his father will be displeased at the destruction of water bodies.
“We should be celebrating today, but how can we do that when the very things he stood for are being destroyed in our face? The late President will not be happy if he happens to be alive today to see how our water bodies and forest reserves have been destroyed.”
Present at the ceremony were NDC executives, MPs and other dignitaries.
The late former President Jerry John Rawlings was the longest serving President in the history of Ghana and the first President in the country’s 4th Republic.
