Travellers who use the Kpando Torkor ferry are stranded while others still risk their lives crossing the Volta Lake in a canoe carrying about 120 persons.
This follows the breakdown of the ferry yet to be fixed, weeks after it was taken away for repairs, causing significant inconvenience for travellers.
In desperation, some passengers have turned to canoes, despite safety concerns. These overcrowded canoes not only lack proper safety measures but also put lives at serious risk due to the lake’s unpredictable conditions.
Speaking to Channel One News, Assembly member for the Kpando Torkor Electoral Area, Joshua Amenyogbe expressed deep concern and urged authorities to expedite the repair of the ferry.
He emphasised that a quick resolution is essential to prevent any potential disaster.
“Our ferry has broken down for the past two months making travelling very difficult for businessmen, students and other travellers. To be frank, life without the ferry for the past two months has been very risky. People travel across the river in a canoe or fishing boat without life jackets.
“Owners of boats also take advantage of it and load passengers together with animals. Passengers sometimes find it difficult to get a place to sit in the boat which is dangerous especially when wind blows on the river.
“We were very happy when Channel One TV was here to channel our problem to authorities to help fix the ferry. As we speak, nothing has been done about it and people are still facing difficulty travelling to the Eastern region. As the Assemblyman, I plead with the government to fix the ferry as soon as possible to avoid any disaster in the future.
