The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Suhum remains confident of its chances in the upcoming 2024 elections, despite the recent decision by the incumbent Member of Parliament Kwadwo Asante to contest as an independent candidate.
Suhum NPP Constituency Secretary Stephen Asupa Odame asserted that Asante’s departure will not negatively impact the party’s support base.
Kwadwo Asante, who lost the NPP primaries to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, opted to run as an independent candidate, sparking concerns about a potential split in the NPP vote.
However, Asupa Odame downplayed any adverse effects, stating on The Constituency segment on Channel One TV that Asante’s choice hasn’t weakened the party.
“His departure hasn’t affected the party in any way. What I will say is that he is still part of us, once he remains a member of parliament you will get some people following him. But when we are talking about its effect, negatively, it hasn’t.
“What we know is that we will eventually win. The margin might be small, but we will win. Kwadwo Asante has been unfaithful to the party. This is because you cannot ride on the back of the party to parliament and when you lose to someone who also went through the same process as you, you don’t want to agree and for that matter, you opt to go independent and ‘spoil’ the works of the party,” he stated.
The incumbent Member of Parliament for Suhum, Kwadwo Asante, on September 1, announced his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming election following his loss in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa.
Despite his defeat, numerous NPP supporters in the constituency encouraged him to contest independently.
In response, high-ranking party officials, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, attempted to dissuade him from this path.
However, he declared his candidacy as an independent, putting an end to months of speculation.
