It is the first day of an indefinite strike by workers from the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).

The GHA workers declared the strike in protest against the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).

The workers argued that the Act, which seeks to merge the GHA with the Department of Urban Roads and the Department of Feeder Roads, would reduce the Authority’s autonomy and increase bureaucratic inefficiency.

A visit by Channel One News to the Authority’s headquarters reveals that most of the offices are shut, with only a few employees stationed at the security post to ensure the safety of properties.

Speaking off the records, a security official confirmed that they have been turning away visitors and clients due to the ongoing strike.

Meanwhile, a client of the authority who is a contractor spoke with Channel One News after he was turned away by the security officials.

“The security told me they are on strike. I didn’t know about it. I am confused. I am here to follow up on my documents. I was here yesterday, but they asked that I come today only to arrive and find out they are on strike. We urge the government to sort things with the authority with haste.

“I am a contractor, and my documents are here to be processed at the payment site,” he stated.
