The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah has accused ministers and government appointees under the Akufo-Addo administration of spearheading galamsey and causing massive pollution of waterbodies in the country.
According to Dr Boamah, leadership of the NPP government and party executives on several occasions invaded forest reserves and carried out illegal mining but the laws of the country failed to deal with them.
Addressing residents of Boadua in the Akwatia Constituency to begin Day two of his five-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr Boamah indicated that a John Dramani Mahama government will institute good and reliable measures to promote responsible mining.
“We know that people [NPP] are making numerous comments about mining. Their leaders, regional executives, ministers and DCEs have spearheaded mining activities polluting water bodies. Today, they are trying to associate themselves with those engaging in responsible mining, but we will not allow them to succeed.
“John Mahama is promising to promote responsible mining. He will provide access to young miners in responsible small-scale mining to acquire mining equipment through a government support scheme. He will also facilitate equipment financing and mining inputs, research and standardisation, gold recovery optimisation and post-mining land reclamation services. Have you heard the NPP say something like this?
“Since they are in power, they invade forest reserves. When arrested by the military they get released. They are destroying the reputation of mining. Let us promote responsible mining”, he stated
