The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has emphasised the urgent need for reforms in Ghana’s health sector.

He argues that healthcare has become increasingly expensive, compounded by inadequate health infrastructure.

Mahama made these remarks on Tuesday, November 12, after he and his wife, former First Lady Lordina Mahama, commissioned a maternity and children’s ward in Bodom in Nkoranza North.

Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to providing free primary healthcare for all Ghanaians and increasing the number of health facilities across the country.

“While we celebrate this inauguration, we cannot ignore the broader challenges confronting Ghana’s health system and the urgent need for transformative reforms. Many Ghanaians can still not access the medical care they need, sometimes not because healthcare facilities don’t exist but because the costs are often beyond their reach.

“For this reason, amongst others, the next NDC government which God willing I will lead will prioritise social interventions designed to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for every Ghanaian. Regardless of their social economic background.

“We pledge to establish free primary healthcare for all Ghanaians. Any Ghanaian who attends a CHPS compound, health centre, polyclinic or district hospital will not pay anything for treatment, you won’t even need to have a health insurance card before you are treated,” Mahama said.
