Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chairman of the Economic Sub-Committee for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto, has advised the two main presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to avoid incurring new debts if they win the 2024 general elections.
Instead, he urged them to prioritize stalled projects and initiatives, such as the Agenda 111 project, to alleviate the hardships faced by Ghanaians.
In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah emphasized the importance of managing existing obligations over launching new initiatives, particularly by clearing arrears owed to contractors and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in their first term of office.
“Over expenditure derails everything, so for me, how do we tighten all those loose ends? Let us not create new debts. Let us take care for instance the IPPs, pay contractors, and clear arrears, so that in the new term, whoever is President, in education and health let us not build new infrastructure. Finish all the Agenda 111, and all the stalled projects. Let us not create new debts at least in the first term.”
He called for measures to ensure that the country’s debt stock does not build up at a faster rate in the government.
“How do we get to the next level where the debt is not building up at a faster rate? The debt will grow but how do we slow down growth in the debt?”
