Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chairman of the Economic Sub-Committee, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto, has highlighted the government’s economic improvements since taking office in 2017, stating that they have “turned the corner.”

He recalled that the government inherited a struggling economy from the Mahama administration.

Comparing Ghana to other countries, he noted that the country’s economy has significantly improved over the years.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s  The Point of View, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah acknowledged the devastating impact of COVID-19 on Ghana’s economy but emphasized that it bounced back due to effective measures implemented by the government.

He also endorsed the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the upcoming December elections, commending him for the economic stability achieved under his leadership.

“NPP inherited an economy which was already at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because it was haemorrhaging. In the first three years, we brought the numbers down, and they were good. Then when we talked about it people said no, but COVID-19 struck.

“So, 2017, 2018, 2019, the numbers were good. 2020, COVID-19 struck. With global inflation all over the world, prices have skyrocketed. And so, the inflation we are witnessing is not peculiar to Ghana. It’s all over. After COVID-19, when we lost our credit rating, and couldn’t go to the capital market, it was a difficult period, in 2021, 2022.

“But what has happened after 2022, when inflation had gone 54% and our currency was depreciating all over? Now I think the numbers are good, we have turned the corner. If I look at countries like Sri Lanka, Zambia, and others and what we were able to do for the economy not to tank [extended downturn] as it were, we have to give him some credit.”
