The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the government’s achievements in the agricultural sector are unparalleled.
He listed the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative and the increase in the price of cocoa as reasons for his assertion.
Addressing constituents of Bekwai, Dr Bawumia noted that government policies have led to Ghana ranking high on the food security index in Africa.
“We brought planting for food and jobs and now there is enough food in the country, and this has also helped farmers. Today, if you look at the agricultural sector, farming has become very attractive, and Ghana is secure when it comes to food.
“In the whole of Africa, when it comes to countries that have achieved food security, Ghana is number 3 out of 54 countries. We have also helped the cocoa sector and today, the price of cocoa has increased.
“The price of a bag of cocoa used to be GH¢475, we increased it to GH¢3000 and two days ago, we increased the price again to GH¢3100. Previously, COCOBOD used to award scholarships to children of cocoa farmers because of the free SHS COCOBOD will not be required to pay the fees of cocoa farmers any longer.
“But from next year, we will implement a new policy that will allow children of cocoa farmers go to the university for free,” he stated.
