Political analyst Dr. John Osae-Kwapong has called on lawmakers to find common ground and break the current legislative deadlock.

This follows escalating tensions over the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant—a decision currently stayed by the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, Speaker Bagbin indefinitely adjourned the House due to the lack of a prepared agenda, following the failure of the Business Committee to convene and set issues for discussion.

The session was originally convened in response to a recall request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus, with expectations that it would address urgent legislative matters.

However, no NPP Members of Parliament were present in the Chamber. Bagbin expressed disappointment, noting that their absence made it impossible for the Business Committee to finalize an agenda.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, Dr. Osae-Kwapong underscored the need for collaboration and compromise among parliamentarians to address the critical issues facing the nation.

Dr. Osae-Kwapong highlighted that “I still think that they can pull some of these soft powers of the friendship, the relationships they’ve built over the years to find a way out of this because both sides also recognise that there are important things that they would like to do, important business that they would like to conduct.”

He also indicated that “I was a little disappointed in what happened on Thursday because I would like to believe that our honourables have worked, some of them have worked long enough with each other. I want to believe that they know each other even on a personal basis, beyond the work they do in parliament, they have good friendships.

“So I was hoping that between the decisions that were made to get enough signatures for a recall on Thursday, there is enough conversations would have gone on in the background to come up with some diplomatic resolution.”
