Beatrice Annan, spokesperson for the John Mahama campaign team, has criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what she describes as an obsession with being immortalised, particularly in light of his recent unveiling of his statue in Takoradi.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama earlier slammed President Akufo-Addo’s recent unveiling of a statue depicting himself at the entrance of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi.

This unveiling, part of Akufo-Addo’s one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region on November 6, has spurred a debate, with Mahama questioning its appropriateness.

Mahama has labelled the statue as an act of “self-praise,” casting doubt on whether such a monument truly reflects the region’s developmental needs.

Supporting her boss in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, Annan pointed out that “Nana Addo has no hospitals or a regional and teaching hospital to his credit.”

She highlighted the irony of the statue’s unveiling at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, asserting that the president had no involvement in its establishment.

“One would have expected that since he was so obsessed with being immortalised, he would have served his nation well,” she added.

Annan stressed that true leadership was demonstrated through service rather than self-promotion which she believed President Akufo-Addo has not shown.

“We think that real leadership is not when a leader praises himself,” she stated, emphasising the need for genuine contributions to the nation’s welfare.
