Prof. Baffour Agyemang-Duah, a governance and democracy analyst, has voiced strong concerns regarding Donald Trump’s character as he returns to the presidency of the United States.

His remarks come in response to Trump’s recent election, marking his second term after his initial tenure from 2017 to 2021.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Prof. Agyemang-Duah questioned Trump’s suitability for leadership, citing numerous instances where Trump’s actions and statements were, in his view, inflammatory and divisive.

He added that, based on Trump’s record and behaviour, “he wouldn’t even qualify to be a headmaster in a reputable public school.”

Prof. Agyemang-Duah also expressed disappointment in Trump’s election, calling him an unsuitable role model for younger generations. Reflecting on the broader state of U.S. democracy, he voiced concern that it may lack the safeguards needed to promote leaders of sound character and integrity.

“Many people have been terribly disappointed not because Trump won but because the character that won the elections leaves a lot to be desired. I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing and seeing on television and I think a lot of people were. I think here’s a person whose character and record will not recommend him even to be a headmaster in any decent public school, in the United States in particular and anywhere else in the world.

“Someone who has about 33 or so convictions, someone who as president was impeached two times. Someone whose language is always foul, someone who always speaks and puts people down.

“So, such a character to be affirmed by Americans in this election clearly tells me that maybe democracy has no room for good character, and therefore anybody such as Trump could be President, but that was the decision of the collective, Americans… My initial impression is a disappointment. We’re talking about leadership that has a public side, if that secret side becomes public, in my view, morality is jettisoned, good character is jettisoned, and that is not a model of leadership, that anybody would like to recommend.”

“If Ghana wants to be democratic as we’re aspiring to be, that part of leadership is not what we want in our system.”
