Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have once again occupied the majority side—the right-hand side of the Speaker—intensifying tensions with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs over which party holds the majority in Parliament.

Thursday morning’s session, scheduled for Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, marks Parliament’s first reconvening after Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recall.

The session aims to address pressing legislative matters that have been stalled by escalating tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses.

Arriving early, NDC MPs took their seats on the majority side, traditionally reserved for the caucus with majority members. The NPP MPs, who have not yet arrived in the chamber, are expected to react to the seating arrangement, which could further fuel the ongoing dispute.

This latest development underscores the deepening impasse between the NDC and NPP as both sides prepare to tackle the agenda items that have been delayed amid the power struggle.

The Member of Parliament for Sabona, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, described the majority side as unserious.

He expressed his disappointment in the NPP MPs for their absence in the house even though they were the ones who triggered the provisions for parliament to be recalled.

“The governing sides are not serious and we are here to do business. We can see that they are not here. They have triggered the provisions to make the speaker recall us. So, we expected that we would have come to sit down to do business. We are here and we don’t know where they are about.

“We are expected to be in the chamber before 10 AM and the speaker comes in at the stated time. So, if by this time none of them is here then it leads us to conclude that they are not serious about government business. They are wasting our time, they are wasting the Ghanaian people’s time and are making unnecessary requests by keeping us in parliament when we have a lot of jobs to do in our constituencies.

“Tomorrow is Farmers’ Day and we should have been there but they brought us here and they are not serious. So, we just want to urge that if they don’t have any business then they shouldn’t disturb the speaker by asking for a recall any longer,” he stated.
