Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has disclosed that about 48% of the water produced across its 90 urban water systems is lost.

To tackle this issue, the company has invested heavily in enhancing measurement accuracy and identifying areas of water loss across its networks.

This was made known at the official launch and demonstration of a new leakage detection facility, built in collaboration with Denmark, at the Ghana Water Institute in Weija.

Speaking to the media, Ghana Water Limited’s Managing Director, Dr Clifford Braimah emphasised that the facility would play a crucial role in reducing water losses nationwide through advanced industry technology.

“Through the pilot and the study, there was the need to set up a training centre to detect leakages. That is what culminated in establishing this at the training school. We had already put this school up as a training hub for the water sector hence when there was a need to build this leakage detection filter, we decided to bring it here.

“Leakages are a major issue for Ghana Water. We lose about 48% now because this is a measured one. We should have been losing less than that.”

The Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Norring, expressed enthusiasm for this collaborative initiative.

“This has been an extremely successful cooperation over the years, it’s now the fifth, and we are going to the sixth year of cooperation. It’s one that we are personally proud of. I am personally very proud of it.

“The very focus is that we bring expertise, knowledge, know-how and solutions in direct cooperation between the experts from Aarhus Water working together with the experts in Ghana Water to find the right solutions.”
