Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has firmly stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus will not allow Speaker Alban Bagbin to dictate parliamentary proceedings and is prepared to take action to ensure the proper conduct of legislative affairs.

In a statement to the press on Thursday, November 7, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the NPP is committed to resuming parliamentary sessions to ensure that essential government business is transacted.

“We would compel Parliament to sit again for the right government business to be transacted,” he declared, stressing the party’s determination to ensure that Parliament operates smoothly.

The Majority Leader made it clear that the NPP would not tolerate interference from the Speaker in determining the agenda of the House. “We will not allow the Speaker to have his way,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

“He is not a member of Parliament; he presides over Parliament. We, the MPs, determine the business of Parliament.”

Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the NPP’s stance on the adjournment issue, reiterating the party’s commitment to recalling Parliament if necessary.

“So we will recall Parliament again. I am saying that we will recall Parliament,” he stated emphatically, signaling that the NPP caucus is prepared to take the necessary steps to ensure that Parliament can resume its functions and carry out its legislative duties.

This strong statement comes in the wake of ongoing tensions within Parliament, especially after Speaker Bagbin’s recent adjournment due to the absence of business for deliberation, which was caused by the failure of the Business Committee to prepare the necessary agenda due to the absence of the NPP caucus.
