Habib Iddrisu, Deputy Majority Chief Whip, has accused Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority caucus of being in contempt of the Supreme Court.
This assertion comes in light of a ruling from the Supreme Court that has stayed Bagbin’s declaration of four seats vacant.
The NDC MPs on Thursday occupied the majority side in the House for which reason the NPP MPs boycotted the meeting.
Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely due to the absence of business for lawmakers to deliberate on, following the failure of the Business Committee to meet and prepare the necessary agenda for the floor.
The recall session, initiated by the Majority caucus, had been expected to address several critical issues. However, as the Majority caucus failed to appear in the Chamber, Speaker Bagbin expressed disappointment, noting that the lack of their presence stalled proceedings.
In his address to the House, Bagbin highlighted that without committee input and an agenda, the session could not proceed as planned.
Speaking in interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Thursday, Iddrisu emphasised that the Speaker was fully aware of the court’s ruling, which necessitated that the NDC caucus should not occupy the right-hand side of the Speaker during parliamentary sessions.
He stated, “The Speaker is well aware that the Supreme Court has stayed his ruling and for that matter we were supposed to sit in his right-hand side.”
He further pointed out that the minority party, despite being aware of their status chose to sit in a position that contradicts the court’s directive.
“The minority is well aware that they are minority and yet they could come and sit at the right-hand side of the Speaker. So they are in contempt of the Supreme Court,” Iddrisu asserted.
