Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has criticized Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of prioritizing his title over advancing government business in Parliament.
Ayariga’s comments came after the majority caucus failed to attend a session they had initially requested, prompting Speaker Alban Bagbin to adjourn the sitting in frustration.
After the adjournment, Afenyo-Markin criticized Speaker Bagbin, accusing him of “supervising chaos” by calling the session without proper planning.
In an interview on Eyewitness News with Serlorm Adonoo, Ayariga countered Afenyo-Markin’s statements, arguing that the Majority Leader’s preoccupation with seating arrangements and procedural disputes was misplaced and detracted from addressing substantive issues facing Parliament.
“What has the business committee meeting got to do with who sits where in the chamber? I have consistently said that Afenyo Markin is not interested in the business of government. He is interested in his position as a majority leader.
“If I am made a majority leader and an issue like what Afenyo-Markin is confronting arises, I will not care about where I sit. I will prioritise bringing the business of government to the house and getting members to discuss the business of the house.
“All these issues about the majority, minority and the numbers and their related matters become relevant only when it comes to decision-making. But every other thing can be done irrespective of where you are sitting,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, clarified that the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs in Parliament was unintentional, attributing it to an unforeseen delay during a caucus meeting.
Agyapong explained that the NPP MPs were occupied with a caucus meeting and were unaware that the parliamentary session had already begun.
He emphasised that their absence was not a deliberate protest or show of defiance, but rather an unfortunate miscommunication within the caucus.
