The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Twum Barimah, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament of intentionally stirring chaos and undermining Ghana’s democracy.
His remarks come as the Parliament of Ghana is set to reconvene on Thursday, November 7, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to recall the House. The issue centres around the ongoing debate over which party holds the majority in Parliament.
Twum Barimah’s comments were in response to statements made by Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu.
Agbodza had announced that the NDC caucus would assume the majority position in Parliament when it resumes. His remarks were made during a campaign event in Adaklu Ahunda, as part of a tour led by Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC’s presidential running mate, in the Volta Region.
In an interview with Channel One News, Twum Barimah highlighted that Speaker Bagbin had clarified that no caucus had been officially declared as either the majority or minority.
He stressed that the NDC’s claim to the majority was an intentional move to create confusion and disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
Twum Barimah further emphasized the commitment of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to uphold peace and protect Ghana’s democracy. He warned that the NDC’s actions were part of a deliberate attempt to cause political instability.
“It is an attitude they want to put up to cause chaos, to destroy the peace and to destroy the democracy that we built in this country. We will not give them that opportunity.
“We are going to ensure that we peacefully conduct government business. We will protect the democracy of the country. We will protect the institutions and we will protect Ghanaians.”
He asserts that the NPP caucus will not cause chaos when parliament reconvenes on Thursday.
