Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has called on Ghanaians to become more actively engaged in national affairs, noting a shift towards spectatorship rather than citizenship.

Speaking at a media briefing on November 6, 2024, Bagbin emphasised the importance of civic responsibility, urging citizens to take ownership of the country’s progress.

Reflecting on President Nana Akufo-Addo’s inaugural address in which he called on Ghanaians to be ‘citizens, not spectators,’ Bagbin expressed concern that many Ghanaians had reverted to passive roles.

“Leadership, I believe strongly, is a cause. Everything else is the effect. Even though followers matter. That is where we applauded the efforts of the president when, in his inaugural speech, talked about us being citizens and not spectators.

“Today, Ghanaians are now spectators rather than citizens. I think we have to wake up and become the citizens that he called us to be.

“That is where I am moving towards. I don’t have any ill-will, malice. I don’t have any ambition… Please, that one I can assure you that I can go and relax and my holy village is always there to welcome me,” he stated.
