The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has once again reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful election in 2024, with Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande assuring the public that the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama, represents a “full embodiment of peace.”
Even though the party has declined severally, calls to sign a peace pact ahead of the 2024 general election, the NDC deputy general secretary stated that as a party, they have no plans to commit violence.
At a recent “Agent of Peace” event organised by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches (GPCC), on Sunday, November 3, 2024, the party’s flagbearer John Mahama emphasised the NDC’s commitment to peaceful elections but underscored the need for state institutions to play an active role in maintaining peace.
Gbande, speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Tuesday reiterated the NDC’s stance, stressing the critical role of institutions like the Police and military in ensuring that electoral peace prevails.
He warned against the use of “criminally produced” military uniforms, suggesting that party operatives wearing fake uniforms could incite confusion and jeopardize peace on election day.
“If you want peace, let us call the institutions of the state who are actors in the peace process. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) is the chief stakeholder for peace in this election. The Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces is a key stakeholder in the peace process of this country and the Electoral Commission. If these institution wants to ensure that the election day the NPP does not succeed in handing criminally processed uniforms of the military for their people to go and cause atrocities, we will have peace. If they don’t succeed in putting their criminally produced uniform on their party verdicts to go and commit crimes as if they are police officers when they are not, we would have peace.
“But let me assure you, President Mahama, you know, is a full embodiment and representation of peace. The NDC has no single plan to cause any atrocity, rig or cause confusion in this election. The only plan we have is that we won’t go to court. Every single matter in this election will be settled at the polling station. I heard the NPP has full representation at the polling station, and the NDC will do the same. But if anybody thinks that you will emerge as president out of a fraudulent election, manipulated the election, let Bawumia think twice,” he stated.
