Health professionals at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital have issued a one-week ultimatum to the government, demanding the installation of speed ramps and a footbridge at the hospital’s entrance.

The staff believes these measures are crucial to prevent the frequent accidents involving clients and staff caused by speeding vehicles on the Koforidua Mampong-Accra road.

On Friday, November 1, the health workers took to the streets to express their outrage following the recent death of a registered nurse, who was struck by a speeding vehicle on Wednesday.

They have threatened to go on strike if their demands are not met within a week.

Speaking to the media, the group’s convener, Francis Aboagye, highlighted the dangers posed by speeding vehicles, recounting incidents where both staff and discharged patients have been hit.

“Our lives are being vandalised, through motors on this stretch. Attempts to get the road authorities to put up some ramps for us, has been futile. We have written letters to them several times. a letter has been sent to the MCE, Regional Minister, and Roads and Highway Authority.

“We started writing letters to them in 2020, this has been four years nothing has been done. This year alone, we have lost 7 people, including four staff members, one dead, and two injured badly, how long can we wait? How long do we want to see people dying? We’re saying that enough is enough, to the government. If they don’t want us to work, we will lay down our tools.

“We have done what we’re supposed to do according to the Constitution by following the right channel, but nothing seems to be done. This is a wake-up call to the authorities for them to do what they are expected to do. Failure to do that we’re giving them one week, we shall lay down our tool, we shall not work.”

Nurses at the labour ward department who lost one of their colleagues expressed their worry about the unfortunate situation and called on the government and highway authorities to come to their aid.
