The National House of Chiefs has come down hard on illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” calling for an outright ban.
Their concerns center around the devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies and the environment.
In a statement released on November 1, the Registrar of the National House of Chiefs, Anthony Yeboah Tabiri, reiterated their commitment to eradicating galamsey, backing the government’s military operation against it.
“In a related development, the National House of Chiefs condemns illegal mining with its environmental and health hazards, and henceforth Nananom declare the practice banned throughout their lands in Ghana.
“Nananom hereby resolve to seize and destroy any machinery, equipment, tools, implements etc. use in furtherance of the act. Nananom further undertake to liaise with law enforcement agencies to prosecute all offenders.”
The National House of Chiefs has previously advocated for a review of the current mining regulatory regime, seeking to include traditional leaders in the decision-making process.
