Residents of Tema Newtown in the Greater Accra region are urging the government to take drastic measures to improve the quality of social amenities in the area.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Community Forum on Thursday, October 31, prominent on the list of the concerns of the residents included deplorable road network, poor healthcare and education.
A resident in the area, Peter Davies told Channel One TV’s Philip Nii Lartey that the “whole place is so chaotic and congested as if we don’t have leaders here. The whole place is smelling. All the gutters here are choked and there are people selling anywhere and everywhere.
Peter Davies also expressed concern about the high unemployment rates in the area. He lamented that despite the presence of an industrial enclave in the area, fewer residents are recruited by the companies located within the community.
“There is high levels of unemployment and there is no hope. The companies here are not ready to employ the natives. Just a few of residents are lazy but the majority of them are educated but there is no employment. We need well paying jobs and jobs that are reliable ad sustainable.”
Faustina Ocansey who is a trader at the Tema Newtown market also lamented at the deplorable state of roads in the community and the insecurity situation at the market and urged the government “to do the little that they can do so that we the people of this community can have peace because we are suffering.”
