Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has ordered the immediate closure of courts in the Upper East Region due to the escalating conflict in Bawku.
This decision comes in response to safety and security concerns raised by court staff and judges. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.
In a statement issued on October 29, Judicial Service Secretary Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng urged registrars to secure all court assets and advised staff to prioritize their safety.
The Bawku conflict has resulted in at least 16 deaths and numerous injuries, prompting the government to impose a daily curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
The Ghana Police Service has also increased its security presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway following a recent shooting incident.
The conflict’s resurgence is linked to rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre’s return from exile, reigniting a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.
The affected courts include the following:
1. High Court, Bolgatanga
2. Circuit Court, Bolgatanga
3. District Court, Bolgatanga
4. District Court, Zuarungu
5. District Court, Zebila
6. District Court, Garu
7. District Court, Bongo
