Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his 2016 claim that there was sufficient money in the country.

Mahama questioned where that money has gone, given the economic hardships Ghanaians currently face under Akufo-Addo’s government.

He further pressed the president on whether he would consider resigning, noting that in 2016, the exchange rate was four cedis [GH₵4] to a dollar, while now it stands at 17 cedis [GH₵17] to a dollar.

Mahama said this during his campaign tour in Lugni, within the Wulensi constituency in the Northern Region, on Tuesday, October 29.

He said President Akufo-Addo fears accountability, hence his decision not to hand over power to him in the 2024 general elections.

“Nana Addo and Bawumia came with very sweet words, and I asked Akufo-Addo, one question, in 2016, he said there was money in the country, but we were hungry and so I’m giving him one question- where’s the money? He said during [former President John Agyekum] Kufuor’s tenure dollar was one cedi, and for [late former President John Evans Atta] Mills and Mahama, the dollar was GH₵2. He said if he were Mills and Mahama, he would have resigned. I’m asking him today one dollar is GH₵17, when is he going to resign? He should tell the people of Ghana when he’s going to resign, and he should apologise to the people of Ghana for the hardships that he has subjected us to.

“Instead of going in peace with his Vice President, he wants to force his Vice President on the people of Ghana. The main reason he’s afraid he won’t hand over to Mahama. He says I [he] won’t hand over power to Mahama, who are you to say you won’t hand over power to Mahama, is the people of Ghana who will decide. The reason he’s afraid to hand over power to me is because of accountability because we’re going to ask questions, we will not allow people who have stolen the money of the people to go free with the money.”
