A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, along the Akropong-Dabaa road, when a vehicle lost control and plunged into the Owabi River, claiming the lives of five occupants, including a mother and her child.
The incident reportedly took place as the mother was driving her children to school, allowing her neighbours to join for convenience.
Eyewitnesses say the vehicle, en route from Dabaa to Akropong, veered off the main road, overturned, and ultimately crashed into the river.
The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old seamstress Helena, 28-year-old plumber Boamah Gyasi Eric, 10-year-old pupil Lordina Yasan, and 41-year-old teacher Rita Agyare.
Local divers and community members conducted rescue efforts and performed traditional rituals at the scene in an attempt to honour the deceased.
The bodies have since been transferred to the Mount Sinai morgue, with family members, friends, and the community mourning the sudden and tragic loss.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and have advised drivers to be particularly cautious along the narrow, winding roads in the area.
The Presiding Member of the Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Francis Bobie Ansah, addressed the media, urging for improved road safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
