The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has instructed its members to end their ongoing strike by October 29, 2024.

This decision comes after several weeks of industrial action by UTAG members across public universities, which severely disrupted academic activities nationwide.

The strike, which began on October 10, 2024, was initiated in protest of the government’s perceived failure to address the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey) on the country’s rivers and forests.

In a statement, the NEC urged UTAG members to return to teaching, with tertiary students expected to resume classes on November 1, 2024.

The association, however, emphasized the need for continued dialogue with the government on the pressing issue of galamsey and its effects on the environment.
