Kofi Tonto, Political Aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the NPP is making significant inroads in the traditional National Democratic Congress (NDC) dominated Volta Region as the 2024 general elections approach.
The NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been in the Volta Region for about a week visiting major towns and villages in the region with his campaign message.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, October 24, 2024, Tonto acknowledged the Volta Region’s strong support for the NDC but highlighted the growing voter share the NPP has achieved in recent elections.
“The Volta Region belongs to the NDC and we are not under any illusion that the region belongs to us. What is more important is the gains that you are making. If you look at 2016, our voter share was 7%.
“In 2020, our voter share was 14%, which is a clear indication of an ascendency in the region. So, when you juxtapose that with the ground form of support that welcomed us in the region, it tells you that indeed the NPP is making an incursion in the region,” he stated.
He further emphasised the enthusiastic reception Dr Bawumia received during the campaign visit, noting that the organic support from residents was unexpected for a region historically dominated by the NDC.
“Aside from visiting the various mini rallies and engagements, the right gauge of knowing how organic people feel for you is those who walk out of their houses to cheer you on.
“You are in the Volta Region and you see people chanting ‘ It is Possible’, running out of their homes with NPP T-shirts, and flags and waving their hands and signing number one and chanting it is possible. That is the organic love that we never expected in the Volta Region, ” he stated.
