The Executive Director of the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD), Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, has raised alarm over the current state of governance in the country, asserting that the government has strayed from its fundamental purpose of serving its citizens.

Speaking at the First Anniversary Public Lecture in honour of the late lawyer and activist Akoto Ampaw, also known as Sheey Sheey, on Wednesday, October 23, Prof. Prempeh lamented that the government now appears to be operating in the sole interest of the ruling party, rather than the broader Ghanaian populace.

He expressed concern that the government’s actions have increasingly reflected a partisan agenda, undermining the democratic principle of governance that prioritizes the welfare and rights of all citizens.

“Now, the government has been turned against the people. Instead of the government being by the people and for the people, it has not become a government of the party, by the party and for the party,” he stated.

Prof. Prempeh’s remarks highlighted a growing dissatisfaction with governance practices that, according to him, neglect the needs of the people in favour of political interests, leaving the country’s democracy weakened.

He urged political leaders to remember their duty to the citizens and called for a renewed commitment to governance that upholds the values of transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.

The Friends of Akoto Ampaw’s First Public Lecture was on the topic: The Crisis of Civic Citizenship in Contemporary Ghanaian Democracy: Lessons from the Life and Times of the late A. Akoto Ampaw.
