The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately creating conditions that forced the government to seek financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to Ahiagbah, the NDC’s actions, particularly their disruption of key government revenue measures, contributed significantly to the country’s financial difficulties.

The government in 2022 went to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for an External Credit Facility to revamp the economy that was near collapse.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday, October 23, Ahiagbah claimed that the NDC had a long-standing strategy aimed at depriving the government of funding, ultimately pushing the administration to resort to the IMF for assistance.

“NDC disrupted the 2022 budget when they called in ahead of time for Ghana to go for an IMF programme when in the book it said that they must create a situation where it will deprive the government of funding, such that its only resort will be to go to the IMF. There is a basis to do that rationalisation that the NDC made conditions difficult such that you would have to go.

“What I can tell you is that NDC has a significant presence in parliament, which led to their frustration with the revenue measure of the E-levy. You also know that the conversation around E-levy is not what the government wants to do, but under the circumstances, it was a necessary measure to solve an immediate problem. NDC frustrated that measure so that the projected GH¢6.9billion that was expected from the E-levy wouldn’t come,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Richard Ahiagbah also alleged that the recent happenings in parliament where the declaration of four vacancies by the speaker has led to controversy over majority status are part of a grand plan contained in a document put together by the NDC to win the 2024 elections.

According to the NPP, the alleged document titled “Winning the 2024 elections and beyond; a comprehensive NDC strategy” has been designed to use the party’s near majority in parliament to frustrate government business with the help of the speaker.
