The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced plans to trigger a recall of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to indefinitely adjourn the House.

The Effuttu MP attributed the Speaker’s move to unresolved issues concerning the composition of Parliament but also suggested that it was a deliberate strategy to disrupt the legislative process in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, October 22, Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about signals from the opposition indicating their unwillingness to cooperate on government business during the recall. He accused the Speaker of using the adjournment as a calculated tactic to impede government operations.

Afenyo-Markin further asserted that the Speaker’s decision undermines democratic processes, adding that it is an attempt to stall Parliament’s work at a critical time for national governance. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that Parliament is recalled to address the pressing issues before the House.

“We know their game; he is aiding the NDC not to allow parliament to operate and enable the government to undertake major government business before we get into the elections. That is their game plan. We know about this. The moderate among them kept telling us and it is exactly what they have done.

“They stated before the opening of parliament. During the recall, we had signals that they were not ready to do any government business and that is exactly what they are doing. They don’t want parliament to function.

“God willing tomorrow, the majority caucus will trigger a recall of parliament. We will not allow Mr Speaker to ambush us. All these things that Mr Speaker is doing, he as the elder statesman that we know him to be, [He] should know that he is hurting democracy,” he stated.

“…We will use the law to get what we want so we are going to recall parliament and then we will see what he will do. Whether he will respect it and recall parliament or not,” he stated.
