In an unprecedented move, the Minority leadership of Parliament, led by Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, have boldly occupied the Majority side of the Chamber during a crucial sitting on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
This action further escalates the already tense standoff between the two main political factions over parliamentary seating arrangements and the balance of power within the House.
The Minority’s decision to sit on the Majority benches follows recent controversies involving the Speaker of Parliament’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, a move that the Supreme Court temporarily halted.
With the declaration, the Minority, now technically having more MPs than the Majority, seized the opportunity to take control of the right side of the Chamber, which is typically reserved for the ruling party.
Speaking to the press in an earlier interview, Minority Chief Whip Governs Kwame Agbodza justified their decision to occupy the Majority side, insisting that their numbers now entitled them to the space.
Tensions were already running high before the sitting, with both sides anticipating a showdown after the Speaker’s ruling had thrown the leadership dynamics into chaos.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, declared four seats—two from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), one from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and one from an independent MP—vacant, leaving the NDC and its allies with a narrow numerical advantage.
Meanwhile, Annoh-Dompreh, addressing the claims of being smuggled into Parliament, firmly dismissed the allegations, saying, “I was here early, as I always am. I was seated, and the security asked me to leave the Chamber temporarily for cleaning. There was no smuggling involved.”
The Minority’s bold move has left political analysts questioning the future dynamics in Parliament, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
With the Speaker’s ruling and the Supreme Court’s intervention casting doubt over the status of the four disputed seats, the balance of power in Parliament remains in flux.
The unfolding situation reflects the heightened stakes of Ghana’s political landscape as the country edges closer to its next elections.
