As tensions mount ahead of Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting, the National Peace Council has convened a critical meeting aimed at preventing chaos in the House.

A contentious session is anticipated following a Supreme Court decision that temporarily stayed the execution of a ruling by Speaker Alban Bagbin, who had declared four parliamentary seats vacant.

In response, the Minority in Parliament has indicated plans to occupy the Majority side until the Speaker issues a new ruling.

To address these potential disruptions, the National Peace Council is actively engaging with all relevant stakeholders. This meeting includes the leadership of Parliament, executives from the two major political parties, and other key agencies.

Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, a member of the National Peace Council and spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, highlighted the importance of maintaining calm and urged all parties to refrain from escalating tensions.

“We don’t really have to see something untoward happen tomorrow because some have said it is most likely some military people will be deployed. We don’t have the basis for it but once it’s been out there, we must prepare ourselves for what can happen.

“So, the advice I can give prior is that the various arms of government need to remove sentiment and see what is happening now as a certain opportunity to understand that certain changes could come at any time and we can look at an opportunity to really improve our democratic journey.

“It is not so much about this party or that party. But where we have reached means that we have hit a certain point in our democratic journey where this decision must be made.

“If we can remove political sentiment and look at it as an opportunity to make a certain change for the betterment of our future,”  he stated.
