The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus’ claim of having a majority in Parliament as a “24-hour majority,” describing it as the shortest he has ever witnessed.

This statement comes in response to the ruling by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Thursday, October 17, which sought to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. The Supreme Court, however, stayed the execution of this ruling on Friday, October 18.

Had the Supreme Court not intervened, the NDC would have temporarily secured a majority with 136 MPs against the NPP’s 135.

Addressing a gathering of party supporters in Nkawkaw, in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia used the occasion to urge Ghanaians to vote decisively for NPP parliamentary candidates in the 2024 elections.

He emphasized that the recent parliamentary developments should serve as a wake-up call, underscoring the importance of securing a clear and solid majority in Parliament for the NPP.

Despite the brief turn of events, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the NPP will secure a decisive majority in Parliament after the 2024 elections.

“A day before yesterday, they [NDC] said they were the majority in parliament. I believe you heard, anyway, that they had a 24-hour majority. it didn’t last. 24hrs majority is what they had. The shortest living majority that I know of in history, 24-hour majority is what they had.

“I want them to know that you come to the polling station constituency to win an election if you want to be the majority and then go to parliament. You don’t sit in parliament to manufacture the majority for yourself,” he stated.
