The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has responded to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s challenge regarding his stance on the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

According to Mahama, his position on the matter has been clear for some time, suggesting that the president may not have been paying attention.

This response follows President Akufo-Addo’s recent comments, where he called on Mahama to clearly state his position on the Free SHS policy, which was a flagship education program of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

“He also asked me to come clearly on my free SHS on free SHS. Again, he is not in this country or he has been sleeping. Because I have made it clear that there implementational problem with the free SHS.

“I have made it clear that there are implementation problems with the Free SHS because there is no dedicated source of funding, parents are also not happy with the double track system, also the quality of food the children are being given is not good, and so I have said that the NDC is coming to power and fix these three things,” he stated.

Mahama went on to outline the key issues he sees with the current state of the policy, including the lack of a dedicated source of funding, dissatisfaction from parents over the double-track system, and concerns about the quality of food provided to students.

“One we are going to put part of our oil revenues into a dedicated fund and that fund will be used to finance the free SHS. Also, we are going to fast-track the completion of our educational infrastructure so that we can ease the congestion in the schools, employ more teachers and allow all our children to go to school at the same time instead of going to the traffic light.

“Nana Akufo-Addo, for number three, I said that I would change your settlement feeding system. I am going to decentralise the feeding of our children in secondary schools. The money is going to go directly to our schools and the schools will be responsible for processing the foods to feed the children so the foods will have better quality,” he stated.
