Private legal practitioner Justice Abdulai has expressed his astonishment at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to disqualify the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central.
Abdulai described the decision as “unheard of” and “mindboggling,” raising serious concerns about the EC’s judgment and legal basis for such an action.
“Indeed, I am rather surprised about the decision of the EC that relied heavily on an injunction placed on a candidate to disqualify that candidate. In fact, it is completely unheard of and I would think that the EC should have a legal department that advises it on matters of this nature,” Abdulai stated in an interview on the Cituation Room on Channel One TV on Thursday.
He further criticised the EC’s reliance on an injunction application, whether granted or not, to determine a candidate’s qualification.
“To rely on an injunction application, whether granted or otherwise, to say that the person is not qualified is so mindboggling and unbelievable that the EC would even take such a decision. In fact, when I heard of this, I was wondering whether we were in Ghana or whether this is coming from the EC of Ghana because it is so unheard of… I do not think the EC had the mandate to do that,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NDC has expressed outrage over the disqualification, viewing it as a targeted attempt to weaken its position in a key constituency. Party officials have vowed to challenge the decision and ensure that their candidate is reinstated.
