The Member of Parliament for Tema East, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, has downplayed the upcoming parliamentary race against his New Patriotic Party (NPP) contender, Yohane Amarh Ashitey, stating that he does not see the contest as a significant challenge.
Odamtten, who is running for re-election in the December polls, expressed confidence and made it clear that he is unafraid to face his opponent.
Ashitey, who also serves as the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, has been criticized by Odamtten for failing to deliver on key promises to improve the area. Odamtten highlighted that Tema remains plagued by filth, potholes, and other infrastructure issues, despite the NPP government’s vow to restore the city to its former glory.
The MP also accused the government of removing dustbins he had strategically placed in various parts of Tema to combat waste. He lamented that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, under Ashitey’s leadership, is a “pale shadow” of what it once was.
When asked during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, on Tuesday, October 15, if he’s afraid of his contender, he said, “No, no not at all, I have never even considered it as a contest. Is he done with the mayor’s job? Today if you want to find him to work as mayor would you find him? If your answer is yes, I will drive you through Tema and you will see how filthy Tema is…Can you assure us of a clean Tema?”
According to him, he has the support and backing of the constituents, emphasizing that they will vote massively for him.
He accused the mayor of engaging in partisan politics, stating that he has not implemented forward-thinking measures to ensure the community gets a standard football pitch and major classroom infrastructure for school children.
“The reason I’m disappointed in the current mayor is the fact that he’s so partisan, and focused on politics, he’s not looking at the tomorrow of our community.”
