President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to debate Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the December polls.
Akufo-Addo emphasised the need for a leader who is reliable, trustworthy, consistent, and clear-minded, qualities he believes Bawumia embodies.
“We need somebody who’s reliable, whose work can be trusted, who is consistent, and who is clear-minded,” Akufo-Addo stated when he addressed some chiefs in Tamale on Wednesday, October 16. “That is why some of us, in fact, the majority of us in Ghana, are saying we want him and Bawumia to debate the issues in our country.”
Akufo-Addo questioned Mahama’s reluctance to engage in the debate, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in leadership.
“Why is John Mahama running away from the debate? He says he’s ready any day for the debate. Why is Mahama running away from the debate?” he asked.
The President stressed that the people of Ghana deserve to see their leaders discuss and defend their policies openly. He specifically called on Mahama to clarify his stance on the free senior high school policy, a significant issue for many Ghanaians.
“What should the Ghanaian people take from you as your position on the free senior high school? Is it safe with you? Are you going to continue it or are you going to review it? Are you going to cancel it?” Akufo-Addo questioned.
Akufo-Addo asserted that no one should be allowed to be president without providing clear and straightforward answers to these critical questions.
“Nobody should be allowed to be president who cannot answer these questions straightforward. Yes or no?” he declared.
