Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has issued a stern warning to the Akufo-Addo government, urging them to exercise fiscal discipline as the country approaches the December polls.
“Rt. Hon Speaker, as we go into another election cycle, government must guard against the temptation to spend what it does not have,” Dr Forson emphasised when he addressed parliament in Accra on Tuesday.
He highlighted the dangers of excessive spending, pointing out that such practices have previously plunged the nation into significant debt and caused widespread hardship among Ghanaians.
“Such reckless fiscal indiscipline is what has landed our country in a debt hole and brought untold hardship on Ghanaians,” he stated.
Dr Forson also highlighted the severe challenges facing the nation due to the devastating illegal mining (galamsey) activities ongoing across the country.
He attributed the crisis to leadership failures, official complicity, and a lack of political will from the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government.
“Mr. Speaker, we are at a crisis point. At the heart of this crisis is leadership failure, official complicity, and lack of political will by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government,” Dr. Forson stated.
He urged Parliament to take immediate action, emphasising that inaction was no longer an option.
“Rt. Hon Speaker, to do nothing is no longer an option. This House must rise to the occasion and bring the necessary pressure to bear on the government to act,” he declared.
