Gertrude Emefa Donkor, a lawyer and the immediate past SRC President of the Ghana School of Law, has voiced her concerns over the country’s struggle with the implementation of laws.

In an interview on the Point of View (PoV) on Channel One TV on Monday, she emphasised that while Ghana has strong legal frameworks, the real issue lies in enforcing and adhering to these laws.

“Everything is wrong. I think that when it comes to laws, we have laws. My opinion is that we have good laws in this country. Implementation and going according to those laws is our problem,” Ms Donkor stated.

She pointed out that the failure to punish those who flout the laws is a significant problem that hinders the country’s progress.

Ms Donkor further explained that the challenges Ghana faces are not due to the absence of good laws but rather the lack of effective implementation and the willingness of citizens to abide by them.

“When you flout the laws you are supposed to be punished for it, but we don’t do that. So, these are the problems that we face in this country. Implementing good laws. It is implementation and the ability of citizens to abide by the laws,” she added.

Donkor was among the 777 newly inducted lawyers in Ghana by the Ghana Legal Council on October 11, 2024, at the Accra International Conference Centre, marking a significant milestone in her career.

10 new lawyers were awarded for outstanding performance during their professional law course. Four of the awardees were men, while six were females.
