The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has raised concerns over landguard attacks on its lands in Katamanso, Greater Accra, which were secured to provide staff accommodation.
The Standards Authority bemoans that for the past decade, efforts to develop the sites have been disrupted by violent attacks, including gunfire from landguards.
George William Asamah of the Authority’s Internal Audit Unit expressed this concern during a visit to the sites by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council and called for urgent intervention.
“As hard as the economy is, people want decent and peaceful places to lay down their heads, and once somebody knows that he’s made huge investments and he’s nearing pension and he can’t possess it, that becomes a bother, that becomes worrying to the person because if I go on pension do I have to relocate to my village. What happens to all these investments?
“…A plot of land here is nearing GH₵60,000 so if you invest here, the cost of cement is over GH₵100 so if you buy 100 bags to do something and the next morning or by the time you get to the house you are called and told your foundation is pulled down, your wall is pulled down,” he stated.
