Former Nigerian President and leader of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), Jonathan Goodluck, has expressed strong confidence in the capabilities of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the country’s general elections on December 7, 2024.
Speaking to the media after a series of high-level meetings with key election stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service, Goodluck Jonathan praised the preparedness of the institutions tasked with managing the electoral process.
He emphasized that both the electoral management body and the security services are crucial to the success of any election.
Goodluck Jonathan also commended Ghana’s overall democratic achievements, highlighting the country’s esteemed reputation within Africa.
“For elections to be successful, two institutions are critical. The electoral management body, which is sharing the recommendation of Ghana, then the security. Today we met with the Inspector General, the police and the EC team of course, we’ve just finished the meeting. So we had a robust discussion about this, with her and we’ve seen the passion they have, the commitment they have to conduct successful elections and what they have done so far, which is key.
“We had interactions with a number of people before coming here and all the issues they raised which we put across are explained perfectly. We have no iota of doubt about the competence and the willingness of the commission to do what is right come the December elections. Ghana, we must also use this opportunity to congratulate all of you in terms of democratic practice in Africa.
“Ghana is rated highly. Yes, there are issues, but Ghana is rated highly and we believe that the next election will even push Ghana. You will not disappoint West Africa. You will not disappoint Africa, especially young people like you.”
The Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, further assured the public that the EC is fully prepared to conduct a credible, transparent, and peaceful election.
“I think it should assure us, and I believe that you know, we, over the last few months, you know, our processes, we’ve demonstrated to the public that, you know, we are poised and ready to undertake credible, transparent and peaceful and fair elections and come December 2024 and our processes have shown that. So we are ready,” she added.
