The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC-Ghana has confirmed its participation in the nationwide strike set to commence on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company on Tuesday, October 8, PUWU announced that all of its members, except those in Production and Maintenance Units, would be joining the industrial action.
The strike is part of Organised Labour’s larger effort to pressure the government into declaring a state of emergency to address the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis, which has caused severe environmental damage across the country.
Organised Labour’s decision to strike stems from the government’s perceived inaction on key national issues, with illegal mining being at the forefront.
“At a meeting held on Tuesday, 01 October 2024, in the Conference Room of the Hall of Trades Union in Accra, the leadership of Organised Labour decided to embark on a nationwide strike action against issues Pertaining to Illegal Small-Scale Mining.
“This decision was reinforced by Organised Labour at its meeting held on October 07, 2024, at the Hall of Trades Union. In this regard, we hereby write to officially notify you that PUWU, and all its members, except Production and Maintenance Units shall join in this nationwide strike, starting from Thursday, 10th October, 2024 as per the attached statement.”
