The Presidential Candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Madam Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah has opposed the request by political parties for an audit of the 2024 Provisional Voter Register.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been pushing for the audit of the voter register before the December polls. They argue that the current voter register is not fit for purpose.
The Electoral Commission has pledged to correct any anomalies it may find, ensuring a credible register for the elections. It was previously stated that the NDC did not exhaust all established processes, asserting that a forensic audit was unnecessary.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Madam Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah argued that the timeframe for the auditing is not ideal, especially considering the duration of the elections.
She stated that the laws governing the EC’s operations include an auditing process, rejecting actions that could send negative signals about Ghana to the international community.
“I did not support either NDC or NPP, I don’t support NDC or NPP, I support the people of this country. My view is simple, the voters register, we have how many weeks to elections? I don’t think this is the time for the external audit of the register.
“The Constitution and the system that we have, the by-laws that we have for the EC system [C.I], gives you and me the opportunity and everybody else, the opportunity to audit and there’s a process of auditing.
“That’s all we are saying, that’s where we are today, any situation of panic to the people and to make it look as if Ghana is ready for a war, might not be the best, that’s all.”
In a statement on October 8, the Electoral Commission denied claims by the National Democratic Congress that the Commission pledged to make available the revised Provisional Voters Register (PVR) within a week after the televised Special meeting with the Political parties and other Civil Society Organisations, on October 1, 2024.
