Ghana is preparing for a nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, as the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of TUC-Ghana directs its members to stay off work in protest.

The strike is in response to the government’s perceived inaction on the issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

GAWU’s decision to participate in the strike was finalized after a meeting with President Akufo-Addo on October 3, 2024, failed to produce any meaningful resolution.

The President’s inability to persuade Organised Labour to reconsider their strike action has prompted more unions, including GAWU, to join the cause.

This strike forms part of a larger movement by Organised Labour, aimed at pressuring the government into taking stronger measures against the destructive practice of galamsey.

The unions are calling for a declaration of a state of emergency to effectively address the illegal mining crisis that continues to devastate the country’s environment.

“We therefore call on management to support this course as all workers are directed to stay off work with effect from Thursday 10th October 2024 until the government accede to our demands.”
