Galamsey: Unions that have backed Organised Labour’s intended nationwide strike

Several unions have thrown their weight behind Organised Labour’s planned nationwide strike action aimed at addressing the rampant issue of illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The strike, set to commence tomorrow Thursday October 10, 2024, has garnered widespread support from various sectors, highlighting the urgency and importance of the cause.

Among the unions backing the strike is the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC-Ghana, which has confirmed that all its members, except those in critical Production and Maintenance Units, will participate.

The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of TUC-Ghana has also directed its members to embark on a nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The University of Health Allied Sciences (UHAS) division of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has declared its support for the Organised Labour strike starting October 10, after a majority vote.

In a poll conducted on October 8, UHAS faculty members overwhelmingly backed the strike: Eligible voters: 262, Total votes cast: 115 (43% voter turnout), Yes votes: 104 (90.4%), No votes: 11 (9.6%).

The Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) has also affirmed its full support for the nationwide strike by Organised Labour.
