The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has distanced itself from a breakaway group opposing the planned strike by Organised Labour.

On Monday, October 7, members of TUTAG’s Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) chapter voiced their opposition, citing a lack of consultation by Organised Labour before announcing the industrial action.

They urged Organised Labour to formally communicate the strike to them.

However, Organised Labour remains resolute in its strike against illegal mining popularly called galamsey, reaffirming its commitment during a press conference on October 7.

In a statement released on October 8, TUTAG disavowed the dissenting group, emphasising that their resistance doesn’t reflect TUTAG’s leadership views.

Instead, TUTAG expressed full solidarity with Organised Labour’s efforts to address the galamsey crisis through lawful and constructive actions.

“TUTAG stands in full solidarity with Organised Labour in its efforts to highlight this critical issue and supports any lawful and constructive actions to resolve the galamsey crisis.

“We wish to reassure our members that TUTAG remains fully committed to representing their interests in all matters, including the upcoming planned strike. As a member of Organised Labour, we are fully aligned with the broader objectives of safeguarding the environment and ensuring that the voices of the working class are heard and respected.”

TUTAG urged its members to remain calm ahead of an emergency congress on Wednesday, October 9, where a final decision will be made regarding Organised Labour’s proposed industrial action.
