Thousands of Ghanaians took to the streets of Accra to demand the swift passage of the Anti-Gay Bill, officially known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
The demonstrators, waving placards and chanting slogans, marched through the city’s main thoroughfares, calling on the Attorney General and the Chief Justice to expedite the hearing of the cases on the bill so the president could approve it.
The bill, which has been a subject of intense debate, seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities and promote what it describes as “proper human sexual rights” in line with Ghanaian cultural values.
Supporters argue that the legislation is necessary to protect the moral fabric of society, while opponents warn that it could lead to increased discrimination and human rights abuses.
Among the protesters were religious leaders, traditional authorities, and members of various civil society organisations.
