A member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has filed a petition for the removal of Dr. Frank Serebour as president, citing unilateral decision-making without consulting the National Executive Council or General Assembly.

Specifically, the issue revolves around Dr. Serebour’s statement on Organized Labour’s strike against illegal mining, which has severe health and environmental consequences.

The petitioner, Dr (Med) Nene Limon Abayateye in his petition argued that his action was in contravention of Article 16 of the GMA constitution, and had “brought the association into disrepute in the eyes of the general public and made the association appear duplicitous in the eyes of well-meaning Ghanaians, given our previous positions on illegal mining.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the GMA called on its members to “continue providing full services without interruptions,” despite the upcoming nationwide industrial action announced by Organised Labour, which is set to commence on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour clarified, “The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has not declared a roadmap for industrial action. Therefore, all members are expected to continue providing full services without interruptions.”
