Leadership of the Cocoa Carriers Association has instructed its members at the Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi depots of the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited to commence an indefinite sit-down strike starting today, October 7, 2024, over issues related to their conditions of service.

In 2022, members of the association undertook a similar strike, demanding wage increases and improved working conditions.

The previous strike led to thousands of bags of cocoa beans being left unattended at various warehouses of the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited.

National Chairman of the Cocoa Carriers Association, Raymond Atanga Abobiga, issued a directive, urging all members to participate fully in the industrial action.

“We are going to report at work, but it will be at the gate of the various warehouses. And then we are not going to work until they attend to our needs and our demand. And I want the management of Cocoa Board and our directors to know that we are not against an individual and that we are fighting a just cause.

“It is as if some individuals just purpose that we are carriers and we don’t deserve to live a better life. We are carriers and they treat us as if we are not citizens or we are less privileged citizens or disadvantaged citizens for the work we do. I want to let them understand that we are doing a very delicate work as far as Cocoa Board is concerned.”
